High Power Rocketry

A RAMBLIN' ROCKET CLUB PROJECT

High Power Rocketry

NAR Section 701 - GTRC

High Power Rocketry at Georgia Tech is a self-paced, educational project where members can learn the fundamentals of rocketry. Members learn and apply the basics of rocketry through designing and building scratch built rockets to earn certifications with the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) or Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA).

About HPR

High Power Rocketry is focused on teaching members fundamental rocketry concepts including simulation, CAD, and manufacturing techniques. We support learning through lectures, workshops, and office hours which cover both the basics and fine details of high power rocketry.

HPR provides members all the materials required to build and fly two high power rockets, one for each of the first two levels of certification through NAR or TRA. Certification rocket projects are self-paced, allowing members to participate regardless of their academic workload or schedule.

Beyond certifications, HPR provides members with support for other high power rocketry projects as well. We provide additional materials and resources for projects such as minimum diameter supersonic rockets or unconventional designs. Our members can borrow avionics systems, GPS trackers, parachutes, onboard cameras, motor cases, and motors at any HPR launch.

New this year, HPR is building and launching a two-stage rocket. The vehicle is a 4-inch diameter, 11-foot-tall fiberglass rocket targeting an apogee of over two miles in altitude. This project will provide members with hands-on experience in avionics bay design, staging electronics, and launch operations. Focused on learning, the primary goals of this project are successful and reliable stage separation, ignition, and recovery of both stages.

HPR attends monthly launches throughout the academic year, giving our members the opportunity to launch their rockets regularly. We typically attend launches at HARA and SEARS in Alabama, GRITS in Georgia, and ROSCO/ICBM in South Carolina. Hope to see you there!
